5/22/09 @ HHH Metrodome

We made the 5hr + trek to the Dome, arriving in the Twin Cities around 2pm.  Our hotel was 7 blocks from the spaceship stadium, so, we made the walk.

Eventually, this was our view…

Take a look at this little ticket booth located outside of GATE B…

HHH Metrodome 5_22_09 010.jpg
…GATE B is where we entered.  This put us right into the left field home run porch.

The gates to the stadium opened 2 hrs. before game time.  This was a nice surprise.  I don’t get why all major league teams don’t do this.  Makes no sense to me.

When I did enter the stadium, I was reminded how terrible The Metrodome is for ballhawking.
BIGGLOVEBOB, I feel for you brother.

A few random shots…

…I’m willing to bet the fine folks of Minnesota won’t lose any sleep when they move out of this place.

When I entered the stadium, the Twins were on the field.  They weren’t hitting anything into the stands.  They weren’t tossing anything up, either.

I noticed the Brewers pitchers were out in right field warming up, so, I headed over there.

When I arrived, Brewers pitcher JEFF SUPPAN was finishing his warm-up.  I asked him for the baseball and he lobbed it high into the seats, right to me.  I had BALL #1 on the day.  I took a closer look at it-COMMEMORATIVE ball!!  Woohoo!

I made my way back over to left field because the Brewers righties were now in the cage.

The Brewers weren’t tossing many baseballs into the crowds.  They barely noticed we were there, actually.  I don’t get that.  Over the years, I’ve noticed that the players that have more fun with the fans just have more fun in general.  Just my observation.

Anyway, about 20 minutes passed with nothing.  The stands were filled with fans.  It was becoming a challenge.  The Metrodome is a TOUGH place to ballhawk.  Wow.

Eventually, Ryan Braun took his turn and started launching some bombs.

One was hit high to my right.  I was in deep left-center field.  I ranged to my right about 20 feet and squeezed it on the fly for BALL #2.  Sweet.

Another 20 minutes passed with nothing.  I was in the middle of thanking a higher power for not living in Minneapolis when I noticed something.  A ball was sitting down the left field line about 8 feet out from the wall near the Twins bullpen area.

Since the Brewers weren’t tossing baseballs nor were they hitting baseballs, I decided to go try my luck.

When I arrived, I politely excused myself all the way down to the front row.  The ball was still there, yet to be claimed.  The area was packed with fans.  Before I started to go to work on the ball, I asked anyone in ear shot the following:

“If I can get that ball off the field without stepping onto the field, does anyone think that’s stealing??”
In a pretty simultaneous response, everyone (and I mean every single person) stated, “no.”

I said, “alright” and went to work.

After approx. 5-7 seconds, BALL #3 (which had ‘LOOKIN’ SHARP’ written on the sweet spot) was reeled in.  Another 5 seconds and the ball was in possession of a young Brewers fan.

His Mother thanked me.  His Father shook my hand.  People lightly cheered and complete strangers were thanking me.

Wow…good people (strangers) really DO exist.
(My apologies for being a bit hardened by the past week’s turn of events)

Eventually, the game began.

Here was my view to the right…

…SECTION 101/ROW 9/SEAT 1

My view to the left…

HHH Metrodome 5_22_09 022.jpg

…perfect home run territory in left-center field.

Take a look at my view straight ahead…

HHH Metrodome 5_22_09 025.jpg
…see that chair at the bottom of the steps?  That’s for Twins security to sit in while the game is in progress.  The Minnesota Twins do not allow fans in the first 2 rows.  Most likely due to potential fan interference.  That’s unfortunate…those 1st two rows are right on the wall.

Nothing would be hit my way as the Twins bottled up the Brewers 11-3.  Twins RF Michael Cuddyer hit for the cycle in the process…very cool.  His home run went over my head and to the left by about 15 rows…absolute bomb.  His double was a ground-rule double to the front row 1 section over to my left.  Those would be 2 cool balls to snag.

The two commemorative balls I did manage to snag…

HHH Metrodome 5_22_09 030.jpg
…very neat logo.

Finals for the day…

Game on…Welcome back brotha…D
http://baseballsnatcher.mlblogs.com/

welcome back, Happy. I’m glad you didn’t give up after last week. Anyway, I’m looking forward to my first and last trip to the HHH Metrodome in August. Can you tell me, which section is closer to CF section 100 or section 101? When I bought my tickets in section 100, the website highlighted 100 and 1001, so I am confused which I will be in.

Nick –

Glad to see you didn’t disappear or give up. People are jacka$$e$ and so are some of the players. Although I haven’t been through the exact same thing we have all dealt with someone getting ********** because of what we did with a ball, what we asked for or whatever.

The Metrodome is a horrible place to “Hawk”. I was there about 9 years ago. The seats in left field are too steep, the fans there don’t know how to use a glove and if you aren’t paying attention you will get hit with a ball after you lose it in the roof!

By the way you were even the topic of discussion on a couple of talk shows out here and most of the hosts stuck up for you. One said, “Why would a Major League franchise work that hard to screw a fan when they have less than 10,000 at most of their games”
Another said “We are talking $100 for 2 bats a ball and some ****** seats to a game later in the year!! Pathetic!!! Shame on the Marlins”

Good luck and we hope to see you out here in LA sometime this season!!!

Why are all of your old entries gone? Were you forced to take them down by MLBlogs?

Nick – most people are good. You see that everyday. Just keep your eyes opened for it. Glad you had fun at the game.

Hi Nick….

Was that your first witnessing of a cycle in person? I’ve seen two. Both back at Qualcomm Stadium. Greg Colbrunn on the Dbacks in 2002 and John Olerud on the Mariners in 2001. The Padres have never had a player hit for the cycle. I’m not 100%, but I don’t think we’ve had a visiting player hit for the cycle at PETCO. If we have, then it was a day that I wasn’t there. Glad to see you’re blogging again. I like your entries.

Leigh

Happy,

Nice write-up catching the Braun ball. Great imagery. I could also image how tough it would be to catch a ball in the Metrodome, with that white roof and all … Great catches Happy! You rock.

Cool, man. I’m hoping to snag a commemorative Metrodome ball sometime this year. Maybe in July when the Twins are in SoCal. Nice entry, Happy.

Those commemorative balls look sweet. The HHH dome is a rough place. I only got 9 balls total in two games there back in ’99 so I’m very much looking forward to the new ballpark, chilly weather and all.

Hey Happy,

I’ll be looking for you the first part of June when the Rockies are in brewtown. The bright yellow shirt right? Lol tough to miss, hope you are at the games man. Got back from Turner Field the other day. You would be in your glory hawking as nobody there besides a few ten-year-olds goes for balls and you got plenty of space to roam in the outfield. Keep it rockin.

D…
It’s great to be back.

TODD…
Sec. 101 is closer to centerfield than Sec. 100.
It’s right in the power alley-a perfect place.

JOHN…
Thanks for the support.

PUCK…
I took them down due to the internet cowboys running rampant.

JULIA…
Wise words.

LEIGH…
I saw Chad Moeller do it back in ’04. Always a treat to see history.

JEREMY…
Thanks! I will not miss the dome.

MATT…
The Twins have them in the bucket. Good luck!

DINO…
Great to be back.

JONNNNNN…
#1 is cool.

BRIAN..
Thanks for all the support. Good luck getting that HHH ball!

JOHN…
Congratulations, sir, on the big 100.

ZACK…
That place just sucks-no doubt.

TOM…
I plan on being there. Look forward to meeting you.

“Happy”

well, although I’ve read nothing good about the Metrodome, it’s good you got to visit it this, its final year. You’re a good man for giving that kid the ball, keep up the good work.

http://eatsleepmlb.mlblogs.com

That is pretty cool, and yes the Twins do need a new Stadium

Hey, I just posted an entry on a subject that I would like to know where you stand on this issue. When you get a chance, check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks!

Hey Nick —
Stupid question. How can I find out the names of the umpires at the games I go to? Just so I can call them by their name. Thanks brotha!
Brian

Happy,
I’m glad you were able to get some balls! I think I’m going to try to go to the bullpen because it seems like it’s not too hard to get balls from the pitchers. I’m excited to go to a bunch of games this summer! Once again very kind of you to give the ball to a kid.

JONNNNNN/JOHNNY…
thanks!

CASEY…
The doors open 1 1/2 hrs. prior on weeknights and 2 hrs. prior on weekends.

BRIAN…
Sorry for the delay, I will check it out.
As far as the umps, do one of two things: Either listen to the PA announcer and watch the scoreboard before the start of the game OR do what I do. Go to this site and print off the complete ump roster. Look up their number and BAM! You have your home plate ump!
Here’s the address:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/umpires/roster.jsp

Hope this helps!

ELIZABETH…
Bullpens are good for balls-keep up the good work!
